Tax Assistant x1

Tax Assistant x1

Job Description

At BDO, we believe practical tax expertise is just as important as technical knowledge. Our Projects Team is the engine room of the tax department, the specialists who handle the real, on-the-ground tax work that keeps clients compliant, protected, and moving forward.

We are looking for a detail-oriented, process-driven Tax Assistant who enjoys working with systems, solving operational tax challenges, and navigating ZRA procedures with confidence. If you excel at digging into tax accounts, managing portal processes, and supporting high-impact tax projects, this role is your perfect fit.

Tax Assistant

Key Responsibilities/Requirements

· Handle day-to-day practical tax matters including tax account reconciliations, deregistration, tax registrations, profile updates, and ZRA portal work.

· Navigate the ZRA online portal confidently: applications, follow-ups, objections, clarifications, and grievance management.

· Draft tax compliance advice and prepare supporting schedules for seniors and managers.

· Review client tax positions for PAYE, VAT, WHT, Income Tax, and Customs-related matters, ensuring accuracy and compliance.

· Assist with preparing objection letters, penalty waiver requests, and general correspondence with the ZRA.

· Support internal teams during tax disputes and audits by compiling facts, tracking timelines, and gathering supporting documents.

· Assist tax seniors in drafting Tax Health Checks and Tax Due Diligence reports and responding to client queries.

· Maintain proper documentation and organised engagement files.

· Engage with clients professionally to request information, clarify issues, and update them on progress.

· Work collaboratively with advisors and managers to ensure smooth delivery across tax engagements.

Qualification

· Degree in Accounting, Economics, Law or a relevant qualification.

· A professional qualification (e.g., ZICA, ACCA, CIMA, ADIT) is an added advantage.

· At least two (2) years practical experience in a similar role.

· Solid understanding of Zambian tax types: Income Tax, VAT, PAYE, WHT, Customs & Excise.

· Strong experience working with the ZRA online portal and familiarity with internal workflows and procedures.

· Strong numerical skills and the ability to reconcile and analyse accounts.

· Good research, analytical and writing skills.

· Demonstrated ability to set goals and develop priorities to ensure that work is completed with a high degree of accuracy within the context of completing deadlines.

· Good communication and interpersonal skills.
