Job Description
This role will lead the development and implementation of our Company’s sustainability strategy. As a key leader in advancing our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, the Sustainability Manager will drive programs and policies that support decarbonization, resource efficiency, compliance with environmental regulations, and long-term resilience. This role is critical in embedding sustainability into our business model and aligning sustainability efforts with our core mission to provide safe, reliable, and cleaner energy to our customers.. This role will support regulatory compliance, strengthen sustainability governance, and guide risk-informed decision-making across the organization.
The role will report to the Senior Manager - HSES and Risk
Key Accountabilities:
- Deliver environmental company policy and programs in strict compliance with legislative and statutory instruments.
- Develop and manage company-wide sustainability initiatives and ensure alignment with strategic goals, including carbon reduction targets, renewable energy integration, and resource stewardship.
- Lead cross-functional teams to design and implement programs related to energy transition, climate risk, circular economy, and environmental stewardship.
- Support the implementation of sustainability programs that drive decarbonization and resilience.
- Oversee the collection, analysis, and reporting of sustainability data, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water and energy usage, waste diversion, and ESG metrics.
- Contribute to the development of sustainability-related policies, targets, and disclosures to meet stakeholder and regulatory expectations.
- Ensure compliance with environmental laws, regulatory requirements, and voluntary frameworks (e.g., Environmental Social Impact Assessments, GRI).
- Collaborate with stakeholders across operations, engineering, regulatory, legal, and communications to embed sustainability into company practices and risk-based decision-making/or align business practices with sustainability goals.
- Prepare and publish sustainability and ESG disclosures, reports, and communications for both internal and external stakeholders. ensuring consistency and transparency.
- Stay abreast of emerging regulations, technologies, and trends in the energy and utilities sector to inform strategy and identify new opportunities.
- Engage with community partners, regulators, and industry groups to build partnerships and represent the company’s sustainability agenda.
- Integrate sustainability into enterprise risk management (ERM) by identifying and evaluating environmental, climate-related, and ESG risks that could impact operations, regulatory standing, and long-term strategy.
- Lead climate and ESG risk assessments, including analysis of both physical and transition risks, and support the development of mitigation measures and integrating findings into enterprise risk management (ERM) frameworks/processes.
- Collaborate with Legal and Operations teams to maintain permitting and reporting obligations, and to proactively address changes in environmental and sustainability-related laws.
- Monitor ESG risks across the value chain, including supply chain sustainability, emissions, human rights, and resource use, and develop mitigation strategies where necessary.
- Support the development of risk policies and risk management frameworks that ensure data integrity, reduce risk exposure, and enhance corporate sustainability performance.
- Prepare risk-related sustainability reports and briefings for the top management and board committees, clearly communicating risks, compliance gaps, and recommended actions.
- Identify and respond to reputational risks related to sustainability performance, ESG ratings, investor scrutiny, and public perception, ensuring credible, accurate reporting and responsible communications.
- Undertake Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) for new project developments in line with regulatory requirements to support the acquisition of necessary regulatory approvals.
- Effectively monitor the performance of the enterprise Environmental Management System (EMS) in compliance with international standards and IFC Performance Standards as a minimum.
- Plan and conduct proactive compliance inspection and audit programmes for all company areas of operations to ensure compliance with best practices and regulatory requirements, and environmental performance.
- Design environmental awareness training programmes to support implementation of the Environmental Policy, Procedures and Environmental Management Plans.
- Carry out field/technical inspections and investigations to establish root cause and develop action plans to avoid recurrences of environmental incidents.
- Lead community and stakeholder engagement initiatives related to energy projects, environmental impacts, and sustainability goals.
- Design and implement grievance mechanisms in line with international best practices (e.g., IFC Performance Standards), ensuring concerns are addressed fairly, promptly, and transparently.
- Track and report stakeholder issues, resolutions, and trends to top management as part of ESG risk monitoring and disclosures.
- Contribute to the development of the departmental budget and ensure departmental expenditure is within the prescribed budget to achieve cost control and savings.
To be considered for this role, you will be required to have:
- Grade 12 School Certificate.
- Bachelors degree in Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Natural Resources or related field.
- Qualification in Environmental Management System will be an added advantage.
- Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in sustainability, ESG compliance, or environmental risk management.
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations, ESG disclosure frameworks (e.g., TCFD, GRI, CSRD), and climate-related financial risks.
- Proven ability to provide strategic advice to senior leadership and cross-functional teams on sustainability risk and compliance.
- Experience with ESG/Sustainability reporting
- In-depth understanding of Environmental Management systems and proven technical skills and knowledge in Environmental Social Impact Assessment Studies.
- Good presentation skills using constructive and logical approaches.
- Exceptional project management, communication, and analytical skills
- Sound business acumen with ability to anticipate and interpret changes impacting on environment and social programs and approaches.
- Good understanding of the IFC Performance standards and the relevant ILO standards
